Any type of horse rug, whether a heavy blanket or a light day sheet, should properly fit your horse. Measuring for the right size is easy--all you need is a piece of baling twine or string, a measuring tape and a friend.

Rugs are sold in sizes based on the measurement from the middle of the horse's chest to the middle of his tail. Get a friend to help you take this measurement with twine or string. A measuring tape may spook your horse.

Measure the twine to determine how long your horse is. Many, but not all, rugs are sized in even numbers, so round up the measurement to the closest even number to calculate your horse's size.

When the rug is on the horse, it should fit snugly, but not too tightly, across the chest to prevent blanket rubs. The back should come over the dock of his tail.
