    Average Salary

    • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics includes anthropologists in its salary figures for archaeologists. Average pay for this job classification in 2008 was about $27.50 per hour, or $57,000 annually.

    General Range

    • About 80 percent of archaeologists and anthropologists made between $32,000 and $90,000 in 2008. Narrowing it further, the middle 50 percent had salaries between $39,000 and $71,000.

    Government Opportunities

    • Those working for the federal government earned somewhat higher than the average, about $33 per hour, or $68,000 per year.

    Museums and Academia

    • The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) states that an archaeologist with a doctorate degree and many years of experience, working as a museum curator or a university professor, may earn between $80,000 to $100,000 annually.
