What to Pack in a Labor Bag

Packing a labor bag in advance can save time and prevent added stress when the rush of labor begins. Packing the right items can help you feel prepared for the hospital stay and birthing process.

  1. For Mom

    • Your labor bag should contain the following items for mom: nightgown, bathrobe, slippers, socks, bras, underpants, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash or soap, lip balm, brush, deodorant, focal point and a going-home outfit.

    Extras

    • Additional items might make your stay more comfortable. Include hard candy, baby announcements, puzzle book or novel, baby book or journal, makeup, eyeglasses or contact supplies, maxi pads, watch, address book and favorite music.

    For Partner

    • For your partner or support person, your labor bag should include necessary items such as your birth plan, address book, insurance information, pre-registration forms, watch, list of people to call, money for vending machines, camera and calling card or cell phone.

    Extras

    • Your support person may also want to include snacks, a change of clothing, toiletries and a novel or puzzle book for quiet moments either before or after labor and delivery.

    For Baby

    • Your labor bag should contain items for the new baby as well. Minimally, you should include Onesies, socks, a hat, going-home outfit and a blanket. The hospital will provide you with other basics. And while it won't fit in a bag, you will also need to take the baby's car seat.
