XBox 360 Data Transfer FAQs

The Xbox 360 comes with the ability to move data from one console to another, and there are a few ways to do this. Only Microsoft-certified components can be used to keep the warranty valid.

  1. Significance

    • Data transfer becomes important on the Xbox 360 when changing consoles after a repair, upgrading to a bigger hard drive or purchasing Elite Xbox 360 while existing data are stored on a smaller hard drive. The transfer kit comes included with the Xbox 360 Elite and the 120 GB hard drive. It can no longer be purchased separately.

    Function

    • The transfer moves an image of a hard drive from one Xbox 360 hard drive to another. This includes user profile, saved game files and Xbox Live Marketplace purchase history.

    Identification

    • Microsoft has an Xbox 360 migration kit that includes a hard drive adapter, USB cable and software disk. This kit is the only officially allowed way to transfer data between supported hard drives. Users can also load data onto memory cards, but space is very limited. This is more for moving specific files.

    Considerations

    • Memory cards can't move Marketplace items or large files; that's what the transfer kit is for. Users can only place their profile and saved game locations on memory cards. The transfer kit takes care of everything.

    Features

    • Xbox 360 data transfer can only occur once per hard drive. When the process is complete, you can't do it again on the same hard drives. It also only works with equal or bigger drives.

    Warning

    • Transferring data formats the original drive, erasing all data on it, including any pending downloads from the Video Marketplace. Downloaded Xbox Live Arcade games need to be redownloaded as only the license gets transferred. Note that third-party transfer kits are not supported and void any existing warranties.
