Air Travel Rules for Babies

Air travel with a baby can be especially stressful. This article will familiarize you with the rules and regulations around traveling with a baby and provide you with tips for having a relaxing trip.

    Age Requirements

  1. Most airlines require proof that a baby is at least 7 days old before the infant is allowed to board the flight, unless the flight is medically necessary.
  2. Cost

  3. Because babies under the age of 2 are permitted to sit on an adult's lap, many airlines, such as United Airlines, do not charge for the baby's ticket, while others, like British Airways, charge 10 percent of the adult's ticket price.
  4. Special Accomodations

  5. Parents who call ahead and inform the airline that they are traveling with a baby may be able to get a seat where a bassinet can be set up to hold the baby during the flight.
  6. Security Screening

  7. Breast milk, medications and a reasonable quantity of juice are allowed through the security checkpoint for travelers with infants and children.
  8. Take Off and Landing

  9. Bring something for you baby to eat or drink during take-off and landing to help decrease the pressure that builds up in his ears.
