Etiquette for Steam Rooms
Steam rooms can leave you feeling vulnerable when you expose a lot of your body in a room filled with strangers. Everyone's comfort level in this situation is different, so be considerate of other people when you use the room.
-
Showering
-
Take a quick shower before you enter the steam room, especially if you just finished working out. Also take a cold shower when you finish using the steam room to close your pores.
Personal Space
-
Unless the room is crowded, sitting right next to someone isn't necessary. Give people plenty of personal space.
-
Sitting
-
Sit on a towel instead of a bare bench. This is for the good of your health and the health of others. Women who are menstruating should not use the steam room.
Eye Contact
-
Be friendly, but don't stare at people or look at them in ways that might make them uncomfortable. If you're not talking to someone, avert or close your eyes and just relax.
Nudity
-
Follow your gym's or spa's rules about being adequately covered. Even if nudity is allowed, the steam room isn't a place for doing stretching or other exercises where people see more of your body than necessary.
Shaving
-
Neither men nor women should shave in the steam room. The lather and hair is messy, and shaving nicks can expose others to your blood.
