The Rules of Singles Badminton

The objective of singles badminton is to land the shuttlecock on the opponent's side of the court. Each player must abide by certain rules during game play. If the rules are not followed, points can be deducted or matches forfeited. Badminton can be played on a recreational or competitive basis.

  1. Serving

    • The shuttlecock must be served with an underhand stroke at waist level or below and must cross the court diagonally. Overhand strokes are allowed only when rallying.

    Net Touching

    • If a player or racket touches the net, it is counted as a fault and the other player receives a point. The shuttlecock can hit the net during game play.

    Shuttlecock

    • During game play, the shuttlecock can only be hit once before it passes over the net.

    Resting the Shuttlecock

    • The shuttlecock should never rest on the racket. If the shuttlecock rests on the racket, the other player receives a point.

    Reaching Over the Net

    • Reaching over the net is never allowed. The shuttlecock must clear the net before any action can be taken.

    Scoring

    • The first player to 21 points wins, although a player needs a two-point advantage to declare a victory.
