Metaphysical Properties of Gemstones

Gemstones are earth's treasures, packed with energy. They carry with them a variety of metaphysical properties that have been widely used for thousands of years. They can be used for healing, luck, prosperity, love, protection and removing negativity.

  1. Energy Qualities

    • Gemstones possess either receptive or projective energies. Receptive stones are magnetic and soothing; they promote love, calm and peace. They can be used for meditation and destressing. They relate to fire and air. These types of stones promote wisdom, love, sleep, friendship, prosperity, fertility and growth. Projective stones are energizing, used for healing, luck, success, courage and self-confidence. They relate to earth and water.

    Red, Orange and Yellow

    • These are projective gemstones. Red stones, such as carnelian and red jasper, provide courage and protection, strengthening willpower and energizing the body. Orange stones relate to personal power, excellent for those with low self-esteem. Yellow stones, like citrine and yellow tiger's eye, are attributed to communication and self-expression.

    Green, Blue and Purple

    • These are receptive stones. Green stones are useful for healing, bringing luck or money and gardening. Examples are malachite, aventurine, moss agate and peridot. Blue stones promote peace and restful sleep (think deep ocean). They are also used for healing, especially fevers and pain. Examples are lapis lazuli, blue lace agate and sodalite.
Purple gemstones, such as amethyst and flourite, promote harmony, aid in meditation and reduce stress.

    Black and White

    • These two colors are receptive stones. White is used for safe travel, psychic abilities and intuition. Moonstone and quartz crystal are good examples. Black stones, such as onyx, obsidian and jet, aid in dispersing negativity, grounding and protection.

    Rainbow Colors

    • Gemstones that are multicolored, such as tourmaline and opal, are multipurpose stones and carry the metaphysical properties associated with the colors that they possess.
