How Big Is a World Cup Soccer Field?

Though the size of a World Cup soccer field is not fixed, certain guidelines exist. Here are some:

  • A World Cup field must be between 110 and 120 yards long. During the 1994 World Cup held in the United States, the fields of play were 115 yards long.

  • The field must be between 70 and 80 yards wide. The United States set up fields 75 yards wide during the 1994 World Cup.

Penalty Area

  • The penalty area of a soccer field is 18 yards long by 44 yards wide. A foul committed in this area by the defending team results in a penalty kick.

Penalty Kick Spot

  • The ball is placed 12 yards from the center of the goal line when a penalty kick is awarded to a player.

Goal Size

  • The goal on a World Cup soccer field is 8 feet high and 24 feet wide.

Other Field Considerations

  • In addition to the playing area, a World Cup soccer field requires extra space surrounding the field for player and coach benches, additional sideline advertising, and a safety buffer zone from the fans to protect those on the field. The space varies.
