Quality Manager Job Descriptions
The job description of a quality manager at a company can encompass many different roles from managing day-to-day factory floor activities to training engineers and operators to being the liaison to customers and suppliers.
-
Monitoring Product Quality
-
Quality managers direct the activities of quality engineers and technicians in how to measure key quality characteristics of a process from call center wait times to weld integrity. The engineers define what methods and equipment will be used to measure the tolerances on the product blueprints, while the technicians operate the machines and collect data.
Continuous Improvement Activities
-
The quality manager is responsible for selecting the projects the quality engineers will be working on to improve the current quality of the process.
-
Training
-
Training the staff in updated work instructions and new problem-solving techniques, such as Six Sigma and Lean, falls into the purview of the quality manager as the conduit from management to operations.
Customers and Suppliers
-
Any customer complaint about the quality of the final product filters through a quality manager, who will allocate resources based on the problem's source. This includes interfacing with product engineering, sales and purchasing, as well as sending in engineers to part suppliers.
Certifications Available
-
The American Society of Quality (A.S.Q.) is considered the standard for what is a certified quality engineer, a certified quality technician, and a certified quality manager. The Body of Knowledge lists what perspective employers should expect someone coming in to fill a manager role should know and have experience with.
