Salary Range for Art Jobs

The salary range for arts jobs varies widely depending on the success of the project, the company producing the project and the experience of the employee. Often, the average salary for artistic jobs is fluctuated by a few individuals who make much more than the average artist.

  1. Community Theater

    • Much of community theater is unpaid. While directors and producers may make a small income, the actors, run crew and design team often are volunteers. If there is a salary, it is generally below $100 a project. Generally, artists working in community theater have another source of income.

    Internships and Fellowships

    • Most internships are unpaid, although many offer school credit. School credit is determined by the number of hours worked weekly. Some internships and most fellowships offer a small stipend to cover living expenses.

    Professional Companies

    • Professional artists working in established theater and film companies can often expect to make a living with their trade. The salary range is as varied as $500 a month to millions of dollars a project.

    Art Directors

    • Established art directors, working as designers, managers and supervisors, can make between $35,000 to $100,000, depending on experience. Working in such a position, however, often requires years of experience in the art field.

    Animators and Graphic Designers

    • Freelance and professional animators and graphic designers can make from $25,000 to $75,000 annually. Generally, the income increases with experience.
