The History of Radio Advertisements

KDKA in Pittsburgh became the first commercial radio station in 1920. Before long, businesses were using this brand new medium as a way to reach consumers. Today, radio struggles to compete with television and Internet advertising.

  1. First Commercial

    • The first radio commercial aired on New York's WEAF in 1922. It was a 10-minute commercial for real estate.

    Financing

    • By 1930, 90 percent of radio stations were selling advertising time, creating a revenue stream large enough to support the radio station itself.

    Format

    • Radio advertisements were usually live until the 1930s, when stations began pre-recording them.

    Sponsorships

    • Rather than running a specific commercial, early radio shows often were sponsored by a single company, such as Pepsodent or Kleenex.

    Competition

    • In the late 1940s, television commercials begin to steal advertising from radio.

    Modern Trend

    • Radio advertising continues to decline. In 2009, the industry reported its worst quarter ever, according to Mediaweek.
