Kinds of Clothes for a Newborn Baby
Newborn babies look adorable in tiny dressy outfits for portraits and family gatherings. However, there are several kinds of newborn clothing that babies use for practical day-to-day use.
-
Onesies
-
A onesie is a one-piece, usually short-sleeved garment that pulls on over the head and snaps closed around the baby's legs. It is worn under other clothing; in some occasions a dressier onesie can be worn as a shirt with a pair of pants pulled over the bottom.
Sleepers
-
A sleeper is also a one-piece item. In this case, though, there are long sleeves and legs. Most also have built-in booties so they completely cover the foot. They are available in different materials to accommodate warmer or colder weather.

Infant Hats
-
Infant hats come in various designs. The first hat a newborn usually gets is the knit cap the hospital gives him. Other hats, baby bonnets, for example, can be purchased at retail stores. It's important to protect a baby's head with a hat in the sun or a cold climate.
Booties & Shoes
-
Newborn babies can get cold feet easily. Baby socks or fuzzy booties keep them warm. They also add cute touches to an outfit. Shoes for a newborn are not hard like an older baby's shoes. Instead, they are soft and pliable for comfort and to allow for growth.
Outerwear
-
In a hot climate, not much outerwear is needed other than a jacket or sweater. In cold climates, a heavier jacket is needed or a kind of outerwear called bunting. Bunting is a one-piece garment that covers the baby completely, zips up or snaps closed, and has an attached hood.
