Explain an Email Attachment

An email attachment is a computer file that is sent along with an outgoing email message to another computer or email recipient. Most email programs allow users to send photos, videos and other documents along with the text portion of the email.

  1. Types of Email Attachments

    • There are several types of files that can be sent as an email attachment: spreadsheet files, presentation files, word-processing documents, photographs, videos, portable document format files (PDFs) and even design files generated by Adobe InDesign.

    Size Limits of Email Attachments

    • Certain size limits are imposed by most email services. Online email services usually place 1 gigabyte limits on attachments, or you can only include 10 files per email message.

    Sending an Attachment As a Separate File

    • One way of sending a file along with an email is attaching the file separately to the message instead of pasting the file inside of the email. In essence, the email message and file are two entities being sent to the recipient.

    Sending an Attachment As an Embedded Object

    • Another way of sending a file is pasting the physical file within the body of the email. Using this method works well with photographs and some videos. If the file is too large, do not use this method.

    Saving an Email Attachment and Files Being Blocked

    • Once an attachment is sent and the other party has received it, he or she can save the file to their computer or forward the email with the file to someone else. Some email services may block file attachments due to viruses being transmitted via email attachments.
