A nanny performs child care in the family's home, which may include living there. A nanny has a more involved relationship with the children than a babysitter would, because the nanny is with them on a full-time basis. The amount of money nannies make varies with geography and experience.

    Starting Pay

  1. According to the PayScale salary survey website, median starting pay for nannies is about $10 per hour as of 2009. Nanny Network agrees, stating that an entry-level live-in nanny can expect a minimum $400 per week.
  2. Average Pay

  3. Nanny Locators shows the average pay for live-in nannies at $400 to $600 weekly and live-out nannies at $500 to $700 weekly, for an average of 45 to 50 hours. Live-out nannies working more than 40 hours a week must be paid overtime rates.
  4. Experience

  5. Nanny Network notes that experienced live-in nannies can make up to $1,000 a week. This is particularly true for college graduates and those experienced with infants and caring for more than two children.
  6. Geography

  7. Location matters. PayScale shows median hourly pay for nannies at about $13.50 in Atlanta, $14.50 in New York, $15 in Seattle and $16 in Boston. Nanny Network says experienced nannies can make up to $20 per hour in major metropolitan markets.
  8. Mother's Helper

  9. Becoming a mother's helper is an opportunity to gain experience for a career as a nanny. This person helps a stay-at-home parent with all aspects of childcare, often with multiple children and also does light housework. These workers make $8 to $13 on average, according to Nanny Locators.
