Luggage Size Requirements for Southwest Airlines

There are general limitations for the size of luggage to be carried on planes, however each airline has their own rules. Southwest provides detailed descriptions of what is allowed for passengers.

  1. Carry-Ons

    • Carry-on bags must be 10 inches by 16 inches by 24 inches or smaller.

    Personal Items

    • In addition to their carry-on bag, passengers are also allowed to have a personal item such as a purse, briefcase, camera or laptop.

    Checked Baggage Dimensions

    • Bags to be checked with Southwest must be no larger than 62 inches (length plus width plus height).

    Checked Baggage Weight

    • Checked bags must weigh no more than 50 pounds.

    Other Items

    • Certain items are not counted as either personal items or carry-on baggage. Thes include a child safety seat, canes or walkers, clothing, food to be eaten during the flight and umbrellas.
