Guest Attire for a Destination Wedding

Figuring out what to wear for a destination wedding can be a challenge. Here's how to determine what to pack.

  1. Scope Out the Clues From the Bride and Groom

    • If the invitation didn't explicitly spell it out (i.e., black tie required), look on the wedding website to see if there is any information about what the bridal party's sporting, or any suggestions regarding attire.

    Consider the Location

    • A beachside ceremony is usually relatively casual and comfortable--flats and a strappy sundress for women, a nice linen shirt and khakis for the guys. A wedding in an urban location (Venice or New York) would likely call for more formal attire. Research the weather at the destination at that time of year, and how conservative the location is about attire. You want to fit in with the rest of the party and the people who live there as well.

    Think About What Packs Well

    • Skip dry-clean-only dresses that wrinkle easily, and opt for wrinkle-proof ensembles and natural fabrics that can easily be steamed or ironed.

    Keep It in Your Carry-on.

    • If you want to ensure that you have something wedding-appropriate for the big day, keep it in your carry-on to avoid concerns about lost luggage.

If All Else Fails, Ask the Happy Couple

    • The bridal couple can recommend what they would like to see their guests wearing for their wedding day.
