Pregnancy Precautions & Massage

Massage during pregnancy can be a great way for a pregnant woman to relax as well as relieve some of the aches and pains associated with a growing uterus. A few precautions must be heeded to ensure a pleasant and safe experience.

  1. Benefits

    • The American Pregnancy Association reports that pregnant women who receive regular massage during pregnancy experience reduced anxiety, decreased symptoms of depression, less muscle aches and joint pains, and improved labor outcomes.

    Timing

    • Many massage therapists will not give prenatal massages during the first trimester. While there is no known risk, most massage therapists avoid massages during this time because of the higher risk of miscarriage.

    Positions

    • Prenatal massage differs most from regular massage therapy in the positions of the pregnant woman during the massage. She will either be placed on a table that has a cut-out for her belly or lay on her side with the support of several pillows.

    Pressure Points

    • Trained prenatal therapists should be aware that pressure points in the ankles and wrists can trigger contractions. If the woman feels any tightening in the pelvic area, she should stop her therapist immediately.

    Considerations

    • Always use a therapist who is certified in prenatal massage. Check with your doctor before scheduling a massage, particularly if you have had any complications during your pregnancy.
