What Do You Need to Get a Marriage License?

Because state law regarding the issue of marriage licenses can vary, it is important to always check with the county clerk to determine the exact requirements necessary for couples to marry in your state. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the marriage license not being issued. However, once the requirements are in place, a marriage license can be picked up or mailed (after a waiting period that will vary from state to state) after the application for the license has been processed.

Blood Test

Provide the results of a new blood test. Visit a local physician to test if either partner has a venereal disease or rubella (measles). State requirements vary, and in some states, a blood test is not required for a marriage license.

Proof of ID

Provide proof of age and identification. A birth certificate or driver license is sufficient to establish the name and age of each partner.

Divorce Decree

Show proof of divorce, death or annulment of any previous marriage(s). This is only necessary for either spouse who has been married partner.

Apply In Person

Bring the marriage licence to the county clerk's office in the county where you and your partner will be married. (Some state laws require couples to apply in the county or town where you and your partner will be married.)

Fee

Bring the required fee necessary to obtain a marriage license. The county clerk can provide a list of the accepted methods of payments. In most cases, major credit cards are accepted.
