Muscle Pull Symptoms

A strain is a stretch or a tear of a muscle or the tendon that holds the muscle to the bone. It's often called a "pulled muscle." This is different from a sprain, which affects ligaments that attach two bones.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a pulled muscle can vary greatly, but generally includes pain and soreness in the affected muscle, swelling and tenderness to touch. You could experience any of these symptoms immediately or the next day. In more severe cases, if the tear has caused internal bleeding, a bruise may be visible.

    Risks

    • The areas most prone to strains are the hamstring, groin, back and calf. Also, muscles that cross a joint are susceptible to strains.

    Causes

    • A strain is caused by applying more stress or tension than a muscle can stand. This can happen if there is sudden stress, an item is too heavy to be lifted or the muscle gets overused.

    Risk Factors

    • Situations that put you more at risk for a strain are: athletic activities like running and jumping, (especially if you are not in shape for them), fatigue, cold weather, overexertion and tight muscles. Warming up is essential to prevent strains.

    Treatment

    • The standard treatment is RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Use gentle stretching, and don't apply heat until you are ready to resume your activity.
