Brown University is the "famous college" in Rhode Island. It is famous because it is an Ivy League institution and one of the oldest universities in the country. It was the seventh college founded in America and the third in New England.

    • The College of Rhode Island, founded in 1764, enrolled its first students in 1765. Originally located in Warren, the institution relocated to Providence in 1770. It became Brown University following a gift from Nicholas Brown, Jr. in 1804.

    Size

    • Brown University occupies 143 acres and 238 buildings in Providence, the second-largest city in New England (as of the 2000 census). According to Brown.edu, Brown employed 628 faculty members as of 2009, with plans to hire 100 more.

    Philosophy

    • Francis Wayland, president of Brown from 1827 to 1855, believed that students had the right to choose their own courses of study. This philosophy became official policy in the 1969-70 term.
