National Federation of Baseball Rules

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) baseball rules are designed to promote safety and instruction for student-athletes at the high school level. These rules are used around the country, but not all leagues employ them.

  1. Intentional Walk

    • If any coach or player wants to intentionally walk a batter, they can inform the umpire and the hitter must take his base. No pitches are required.

    Approved Bats

    • Beginning Jan. 1, 2010 any nonwood bat used in NFHS competition must be BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution) certified. The former standard BESR (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) is a component of a bat's BBCOR. This move aligns the NFHS standards with those of the NCAA.

    Mound Visits

    • Coaches are allowed to make three conferences to the mound during the course of a game. Coaches are allowed to make two trips in a single inning without making a pitching change, but the third in the same inning must result in a change.

    Designated Hitter

    • A designated hitter can be used for any player in the lineup, but the batting order can only have nine hitters. Courtesy runners are allowed for the pitcher or catcher if coaches agree before the game. The runners are allowed to run once without penalty.

    Interference

    • Commonly known as the slide rule, all runners must make an effort not to interfere on force plays, such as a runner going into second base to break up a double play. If the runner slides away from the bag or with his cleats up in an attempt to break up the double play, the batter and the runner are out.

    Fun Fact

    • When a runner is hit by a batted ball in fair territory, that runner is out, not the hitter. The runners cannot advance and the hitter replaces the offending runner.
