Savoring a glass of wine is one of life’s great pleasures. A robust red wine sipped next to a fireplace in the cooler months, a crisp white wine paired with a delicious meal, or a refreshing rose in the midst of warm weather – wine goes hand in hand with relaxation and enjoyment.

Sometimes, however, opening an entire bottle isn’t an option. Enter boxed wine: the surprising solution that’s portable as well as eco- and budget-friendly. Plus, with new innovations in technology and several varietals, the case for boxed wine is stronger than ever.

Think Inside the Box

Forget the negative connotations of wine in a box. Boxed wine is a great option for those occasions that call for serving a large crowd, as well as for those nights when you want to do a little wine tasting or just want one glass, or you're cooking a recipe that calls for a small amount of a certain type of wine.

Let’s start with how many bottles of wine are in a box. A standard bottle of wine is typically 750ml, whereas a typical box of wine contains 3 liters or 101.6 ounces

Translation: ‌Boxed wine is roughly equivalent to four bottles. As to how many glasses of wine are in a box, a standard pour for a glass is 5 ounces, making a 3-liter box of wine the equivalent of 20 glasses or servings of wine.

Benefits of Box Wine

Boxed wine is an excellent value, offering more wine at affordable pricing tiers. Boxed wine is convenient and easily portable, making it a good option for picnics, dinner parties and outdoor events. It’s also an easy way for those who live alone or aren’t big wine drinkers. Sommeliers agree that you can find good quality wines for every type of wine enthusiast in these boxes – it’s not necessarily low-quality just because it’s not in a bottle. You can find everything from a great cabernet sauvignon to a delicious chardonnay to a pinot noir – winemakers keep expanding their offerings.

Long-Lasting Freshness

Box wine has the added bonus of extending the amount of time to drink its contents. Once opened, a conventional glass bottle of wine will stay fresh for only a few days. Its exposure to oxygen means the air will affect its flavor.

In a box of wine, the wine is contained in an airtight polyethylene bag that seals out the oxygen. The bag inside the box slows the oxidization process – you use the tap on the box to dispense the wine, which causes the bag to collapse and reduce the air left inside. Wine in a box will remain fresh and ready-to-drink for up to six weeks after the box is opened.

Eco-Friendly and Energy-Efficient

Another reason to tap the box rather than pop a cork is that boxed wine is environmentally friendly, so you’re lowering your carbon footprint while drinking your Bota Box or Black Box instead of a case of wine. While glass is recyclable, it takes energy to produce. Cardboard boxes are less energy intensive in both production and transportation, lowering carbon dioxide emissions. Many modern box wine brands also utilize BPA-free bags, soy-based inks and recyclable packaging.

Ditch the idea that your next glass of wine has to come from a bottle. Instead, opt for a box of wine and keep sipping and savoring fresh, delicious wine for weeks.
