Role of the Catholic Priest

A Catholic priest fulfills many different roles. A priest goes through several years of formation and formal education before being ordained. When a priest is ordained, he is given the sacrament of Holy Orders.

  1. Mass

    • The priest presides over Mass, which includes the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

    Sacraments

    • One of the most important jobs a priest has is to administer the sacraments, including Matrimony, Baptism, Reconciliation and Communion.

    Guide

    • A priest is also considered a shepherd to the Catholics everywhere. He is there to build up and guide the faithful in the name of Christ.

    Parish

    • A parish priest is responsible the day to day activities of his parish. He often delegates tasks to others, but he is ultimately responsible for the parish.

    Other Roles

    • Some priests do not work directly with parishes. They serve as teachers, administrators, Diocesan directors and in monasteries.
