Role of the Catholic Priest

A Catholic priest fulfills many different roles. A priest goes through several years of formation and formal education before being ordained. When a priest is ordained, he is given the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Mass

The priest presides over Mass, which includes the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Sacraments

One of the most important jobs a priest has is to administer the sacraments, including Matrimony, Baptism, Reconciliation and Communion.

Guide

A priest is also considered a shepherd to the Catholics everywhere. He is there to build up and guide the faithful in the name of Christ.

Parish

A parish priest is responsible the day to day activities of his parish. He often delegates tasks to others, but he is ultimately responsible for the parish.

Other Roles

Some priests do not work directly with parishes. They serve as teachers, administrators, Diocesan directors and in monasteries.
