What is the Size of a Baby Whale?

Whales are aquatic mammals that breathe air through a hole in the top of their head called a blowhole. They have hair, are warm-blooded, possess mammary glands to nurse their young and have a four-chambered heart. Babies vary in size depending on species.

  1. Beluga Whales

    • Beluga whales are born between 4 and 5 feet long, weighing 100 to 140 lbs. Adult beluga whales are white, but the babies are born blue or reddish-brown. They mature after seven to nine years.

    Blue Whales

    • Blue whales are 25 feet long and weigh between six and eight tons when they are born. They fully mature after 10 to 15 years.

    Bowhead Whales

    • Bowhead whales are 17 feet long when they are born, and weigh between five and six tons. They mature after six years.

    Humpback Whales

    • Humpback whales are 14 feet long and 2 1/2 tons when they are born. They mature after 15 years.

    Orcas

    • Killer whales, or orcas, are from 6 1/2 to 8 feet long when they are born, weighing 400 pounds. Females mature after 6 to 10 years, while males mature between 12 to 16 years.
