Newborn Puppy Information
Having a newborn puppy can be a lot of work, as it will demand as much attention as a newborn human baby. There will undoubtedly be growing pains, but the process will get easier as time goes on. As a puppy grows in size and age, different training strategies will have to be employed.
-
Potty Training
-
Taking the dog outside every hour is a good idea so the dog can get used to pottying outside.
Shots
-
An initial round of multivalent shots (more than one antigen in one shot) must be given to the puppy within weeks of being born so the pup can battle infections and worms. A second round of mulitvalent shots is preferable before the puppy is a year old.
-
Feeding
-
Feed the puppy 2 cups of food per day for every 20 lbs. of weight (1 cup in the morning, 1 in the evening). Any puppy food will do so long as it is puppy food and not dog food.
Biting and Chewing
-
A puppy's natural tendency is to chew on things. Buy dog chew toys and discipline the puppy for chewing on something it is not supposed to be chewing on.
Walks and Exercise
-
The puppy should be taken on walks daily for at least 10 minutes in order for the puppy to get used to waking and running in open spaces. This also prevents laziness later in life.
