The History of Pretzels

Pretzels are a favorite snack worldwide. They are easy to eat and complement any meal. Originally thought to hold religious significance, the pretzel has come a long way to steal the hearts of people across the world. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • The pretzel is a snack made of bread that can be either soft of hard. The tasty treat originated in Europe during Medieval times when a monk used leftover dough to bake a new kind of snack.

    What are they made of?

    • Pretzel dough is made from wheat, water, sugar and yeast. The final product is often sprinkled with salt. Soft pretzels can also be covered in cinnamon sugar or other toppings.

    Size

    • Pretzels come in all shapes and sizes. They can be small and crunchy; big, soft, and chewy; or rod shaped.

    The European Pretzel

    • In Europe, the pretzel was regarding as having significant religious symbolism. Eating pretzels on Good Friday became a German tradition. The Catholic Church also encouraged eating pretzels during Lent.

    The American Pretzel

    • Pennsylvania is the home of the American pretzel. Pretzels are often coated with yogurt, chocolate and other sweet flavors. Big cities such as Chicago and Philadelphia are famous for their soft pretzels.
