- Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be the quickest way to get relief from earache pain. Follow the dosing instructions on the medicine label, as overmedicating can be dangerous--especially in children. Also, children should never be given aspirin, as it can cause a condition know as Reye's syndrome.
- Earache pain relief can be achieved by placing a cold pack on the outer ear for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Chewing gum can relieve some of the pressure that causes earache pain, but chewing gum poses a choking hazard to small children, so make sure kids are old enough to chew gum safely before giving it to them.
- Over-the-counter ear drops can be an effective way to ease earache pain. However, ear drops should not be used if the eardrum is ruptured.
- Warm sweet oil, or olive oil can be used to effectively relieve earache pain. The oil can be heated in the microwave for five to ten seconds and then placed in the ear with an eyedropper. Test the oil on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot before putting it in your ear.
