Wilderness & Survival Information
Survival in the wilderness during times when life hangs by a thread is a matter of preparation, attitude and fortitude.
-
Preparation
-
Be prepared for any situations that might arise before heading out into the wilderness. Give someone your complete trip plan. Get first aid certification before you leave, and carry medical supplies and a survival kit with you.
Attitude
-
Stay calm. This is the No. 1 rule of wilderness survival. Survey the materials you have and determine what can help you survive.
-
First Aid
-
First aid is the top priority if you or anyone in your party is seriously injured. Always treat the most critical patients first.
Stay Where You Are
-
You might think you know where you are, but charging blindly through the woods will only get you more lost. Wait patiently for search-and-rescue workers to find you. It will make their job a lot easier.
Protect Yourself From the Elements
-
Find or build a shelter, and gather wood for a fire. Watch for the symptoms of hypothermia, heat stroke and other weather-related ailments.
Be Careful What You Eat and Drink
-
Many plant and animal species are poisonous if consumed by humans. Only eat something if it absolutely necessary. Purify water by boiling or using iodine tablets. At the very least, you can filter water with a bandanna or other clean fabric.
