What Is Women's Business Formal Attire?
Women have many choices in business attire. Confusion can arise over what is acceptable in formal work environments as opposed to informal or business casual environments.
-
The Suit
-
In a formal business setting, a suit is the safest thing to wear. A women's suit is a matching jacket and skirt/slacks. A blouse or shell that is not cut low on the bosom can be worn under the jacket. If the jacket is buttoned up close to the collar bone, a blouse is not necessary.
Shoes and Hosiery
-
Wear closed toe pumps and sheer hosiery with a skirt or slacks.
Jewelry
-
Keep jewelry understated. Earrings should not dangle more than 1 inch. Do not over-accessorize with lots of bangles or necklaces.
Separates
-
Instead of a formal suit, use separates. A dress alone is not business formal, but you can put a jacket over the dress for formal business attire. A nice sweater set can be used with a skirt or slacks as well.
No-Nos
-
In a truly formal setting, never forgo panty hose. Also, most formal offices do not accept sandals or shoes that "flip" on the heels. Wear tops that do not show a lot of cleavage and skirts that are knee length or longer.
Adapt to Your Environment
-
Rules can be established for formal business attire, but most offices have their own interpretation. Employees should ask for the dress code and follow it. Some offices require more formal wear when meeting clients and allow less formal attire if there are no client meetings.
