What Is a Black Head Pimple?

A black head pimple, or blackhead, is a type of clogged pore. A black head pimple often begins with excessive sebum oil production, common in adolescence, which makes it difficult for skin to shed dead cells.

  1. Identification

    • Pores are tiny openings in the skin surface. A black head pimple results when dirt and dead skin cells mix with oil and clog pores.

    Color

    • This type of pimple is open at the surface. The oil turns black when exposed to air, in contrast with the pus-filled whitehead, which is not exposed to oxygen.

    Location

    • Blackheads most frequently appear on and around the nose, but also can occur on the rest of the face, ears, shoulders and back.

    Another Characteristic

    • Black head pimples are non-inflammatory, that is, without the redness and soreness that accompanies other pimples.

    Solution

    • To avoid black head pimples, wash your face at least twice a day. This reduces oil and removes dead skin cells. Exfoliants also help.
