Common Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with cephalexin include upset stomach or nausea. This can be avoided by taking the medication with food or milk.

Additional cephalexin side effects are diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and mild skin rash. Not everyone taking cephalexin will experience these side effects; if you are one of the people that do experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, talk to your doctor about any over-the-counter products you can take to alleviate the side effects.

Those who are allergic to penicillin may also have an allergic reaction to cephalexin. Signs of an allergic reaction include: severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and throat or facial swelling.
Serious Side Effects

Additional serious, but rare, side effects include: throat or mouth sores, sore throat, severe diarrhea, unexplained bleeding or bruising, and vaginal infection.
Drug Interactions

Cephalexin can interact with other drugs, including aminoglycosides, metformin and probenecid. It also can lessen the effectiveness of a typhoid vaccine, if the vaccine is administered while the person is taking cephalexin.
