The Job Description of a Controller

A controller is a financial accounting position that is usually the top supervisor position in an accounting office. In larger companies, the controller will usually report to the chief financial officer; in smaller companies, the controller may be the highest accounting position.

  1. Major Duties

    • A controller's main duties are to directly supervise the accounting department, review financial statements, prepare for audits, and assist upper-level management with ad hoc financial analysis.

    Desired Education

    • Most controller positions require an accredited bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. A post-graduate degree such as an MBA or Master of Accountancy is better.

    Desired Experience

    • While experience may vary depending on the company and/or industry, most controller positions request 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including previous supervisory duties.

    Accounting Licenses

    • Either a certified public accountant (CPA) or certified management accountant (CMA) license is a solid qualification for a controller position. Some companies may require a license for their controller position.

    Pay Scale

    • Compensation levels for controller positions will vary by company and industry; regional cost-of-living indexes will also affect total pay. According to a June 2009 PayScale industry report, the average salary for a controller with 7 to 10 years quality accounting experience is $71,000 annually.
