Stony Brook University Campus Information

Stony Brook University is one of New York's State Universities. Its campus extends across Long Island and is home to over 23,000 undergraduate applicants.

    Location

  1. Situated on northern Long Island, Stony Brook's main campus is 1,100 acres in size. The university is about 60 miles east of New York City and is near both the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound.
  2. Layout and Accessibility

  3. The Academic Mall is the term given to the area at the center of Stony Brook's campus. The University is accessible via train--a station is located right on campus--and also features six miles of paths especially designed for students' bicycles.
  4. Housing

  5. Stony Brook's campus features 26 residence halls interspersed throughout the grounds in six different areas. Options include traditional dormitories, suites and apartments.
  6. Activities

  7. Stony Brook offers the Students Activities Center and the Eugene Weidman Wellness Center for food, recreation and exercise. On the northwest portion of campus, the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium is home to Stony Brook's sporting events, while movies and theater are regular features at the centrally located Staller Center for the Arts.
  8. Academics

  9. Stony Brook's main library, the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library, is situated at the center of campus. The southeastern portion of campus is the hub of scientific and medical education with the University Medical Center, the School of Dentistry and the Marine Sciences Research Center.
