Strat-O-Matic Baseball Rules

Strat-O-Matic baseball is a baseball game that is played using cards and dice. Sets are issued each year to represent players that are currently in the major leagues. Players can play individual games with Strat-O-Matic baseball sets or join leagues with other players where they compete in seasons composed of a predetermined number of games.

  1. Choose a Lineup

    • Each player must choose a baseball player on his team for each of the positions on the baseball field. This includes the catcher, pitcher, four infielders and three outfielders. A player can only play a position that is listed on the top of his player card, and not one the Strat-O-Matic player arbitrarily chooses for him. Any player can be a designated hitter.

    Set Your Batting Order

    • Create a pile out of your player cards to represent your batting order. These players should be the players you have chosen to play the defensive positions. Players must bat in the order they are originally placed in the batting order pile.

    Rolling the Dice

    • The batter rolls all three dice, one white and two colored. If the white die shows a one through three you use the batter's playing card to determine the result. If the white die shows a four through six, use the other team's pitcher's playing card to determine what transpires.

    Determining the Result

    • Add the numbers from the two colored dice. Use this total to look on the proper player's card, either the batter or the pitcher, determined in section three. This will tell you the result of the player's at bat. Sometimes you'll be directed to roll the 20-sided die to find the final result of the at bat.

    Advancing Bases

    • In the basic version, each player advances the same number of bases as the batter. In the advanced versions, coaches can choose to have their players try for additional bases by rolling dice to determine the result of their attempt for additional bases.

    Stealing Bases

    • To steal a base the coach rolls the 20-sided die. He must then consult the card with the stealing chart and compare the result of the roll of the die along with his player's stealing rating to determine the result of the attempted steal.
