Substitutes for Sugar in Recipes

People use sugar substitutes while they bake to cut calories and to eat healthier. However, it depends on what substitute you use. Honey has less calories and fat than sugar, while it's unclear if corn syrup is better or worse for your health. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Molasses

    • Since molasses isn't as sweet as sugar, it's recommended that you only substitute it for half of the sugar the recipe calls for.

    Concentrates

    • Concentrated fruit juices such as white grape and apple can be used in place of sugar. Use about three-fourths of a cup in place of eight ounces of sugar.

    Maple Syrup

    • When substituting maple syrup for each cup of sugar, measure three-fourths of a cup of syrup. Then remove three tablespoons of the liquid to keep the ingredients from becoming runny when blended.

    Honey

    • Honey is sweeter than sugar, so if a recipe requires a cup of sugar, you would only use three-fourths of a cup of honey, plus one extra tablespoon.

    Sweet & Low

    • You can use 24 packets of Sweet & Low artificial sweetener to replace eight ounces of sugar.

    Corn Syrup

    • Corn syrup has no flavor. You need one and a half cups for every cup of sugar, and like molasses, it should only replace half of the sugar the recipe calls for.
