Bridal Shower Invitation Phrases

Bridal showers are parties thrown before a wedding to honor the bride (or bride and groom together). Usually they are for women only, and a gift is expected, in addition to the gift given at the wedding. While usually held during the day and not as wild as a bachelorette party, bridal showers often include ribald party games and other sexual innuendo, though others can be family-friendly.

  1. Formal

    • If the shower has a formal setting, such as an afternoon tea, then the invitation can be simple and somewhat similar to the wedding invitation: name of bride; date, time and place of shower; RSVP info and where the bride is registered.

    Theme

    • Some showers have themes, such as one of the bride's interests, or a kitchen theme if she has requested all kitchen gifts. Themed showers lend themselves to more whimsical wording, such as poems or puns such as "We're whipping up a shower to help Carol furnish her kitchen!"

    Couples

    • If the shower is open to men and women, specify "couple's shower" on the invitation.

    Surprise

    • A surprise shower must include that fact, as well as the time the bride is arriving, so guests can plan accordingly. "Please arrive by 7:00 p.m. sharp, as Suzy will be arriving at 7:30."

    Unknown Bride

    • When the groom--but not the bride--is known to most of the invitees, use wording like this: "A bridal shower to honor and meet Jane Doe, fiancee of John Smith."

    Alternative Ceremonies

    • Showers may be held for commitment ceremonies, civil unions or renewal of vows. Be sure to specify if gifts are not necessary by directing guests to donate to charity or to bring a recipe or story in lieu of gift.
