The Best Time of Day to Water a Garden

It is important to water your garden properly and at the appropriate time. Proper watering practices can save both time and water. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Early in the Morning

    • Early morning watering is best for plants. Watering during the heat of the day will result in evaporation before water can soak through the ground and reach plant roots.

    Late Afternoon or Early Evening

    • When morning watering is not possible, water your garden in the late afternoon or very early evening--after the day's heat has passed. Water early enough that the leaves will dry before nighttime. Wet plants are susceptible to rot and fungus during the night.

    Water Deeply

    • Watering is most beneficial to plants when it is a deep soaking, rather than a quick dowsing. Garden plants should receive approximately 1 to 2 inches of water each week. This can be from natural precipitation, or through irrigation methods.

    Water Infrequently

    • Water infrequently (once or twice weekly) to help establish a good root system in the plants. Check your local weather forecasts for rain.

    Water the Roots

    • When watering plants, direct the water at the roots and the surrounding soil, not the plant's leaves. Plants draw moisture through their roots. Too much water on the plant's leaves, blooms or fruits can result in disease, or rot.
