Risperdal: Uses & Side Effects

Risperdal is the brand name for the medication risperidone, categorized as an atypical anti-psychotic drug. Distributed by Janssen Pharmaceutica, Risperdal is prescribed to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder, as well as certain symptoms of autistic children. Numerous side effects are possible.

  1. Most Common Side Effects

    • In clinical studies with Risperdal, over half the participants experienced drowsiness and an increase in appetite. Other common Risperdal side effects, occurring in over 25 percent of participants in some studies, included agitation, insomnia and upper respiratory tract infections.

    Other Common Side Effects

    • Over 10 percent of people taking Risperdal experienced increased salivation, anxiety, headaches or dizziness. Other common side effects include acne, bladder control problems, coughing, dry mouth, dry skin, fatigue, joint or muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat and vision changes.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Several gastrointestinal side effects are possible as well. These include abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and heartburn or indigestion.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Risperdal is associated with several serious side effects. These include breast growth in men, depression or suicidal thoughts, diabetes development, rapid weight gain, rapid heartbeat and high blood pressure.

    Tardive Dyskinesia

    • Risperdal also is linked to a condition called tardive dyskinesia, which causes uncontrollable muscle twitches and jerking movements. Patients should stop taking Risperdal at the first sign of abnormal muscle movements, but the condition may be permanent.

    Further Warning

    • Additionally, when administered to elderly people with dementia, Risperdal can cause heart failure, pneumonia and sudden death.
