Alcohol abuse creates tremendous harm to the alcoholic's family, the alcoholic himself and society. There are more than 12 million alcoholics in the United States, which is approximately 4 percent of the population.

  1. Alcohol Abuse Defined

    • Alcohol abuse is the continual use of alcohol with recurrent consequences. There is also alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence simply means the continued use of alcohol whether it be every day or at regular intervals.

    Harmful Effects

    • Alcohol abuse has tremendous negative effects on general health. Alcoholics can suffer from memory loss, cardiovascular issues and balance and liver problems. Alcohol abuse is often the result of depression, but it can also cause depression on its own.

    Family Disruption

    • When a person is dependent daily on alcohol, the family suffers deeply. The family can feel the negative effects from the possibility of job loss and continually embarrassing situations. There is often constant fear from the many results caused by alcohol addiction and, in extreme cases, physical abuse.

    Dangers to Society

    • The alcohol abuser, who is certainly not in control while drinking, can commit a variety of crimes, create vehicular accidents and even be despondent enough to commit suicide.

    Underage Alcohol Abuse

    • Underage children drinking alcohol, even at home, starts a bad pattern. Parents' intervention and guidance in their children's lives will help ensure respect for alcoholic beverages. Children will also be made aware of the many consequences they can face when drinking alcohol.
