Effects of Atorvastatin

Atorvastatin is the generic name of the medication known as Lipitor. It is used to lower cholesterol and triglyercide levels in those with high cholesterol.

Function

Atorvastatin is usually prescribed when diet and exercise do not work to lower cholesterol. It is also used to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in those patients at high risk.

Time Frame

The effectiveness of atorvastatin will initially be monitored every 2 to 4 weeks. If lab tests do not indicate improving cholesterol levels, the dosage may have to be adjusted.

Identification

The most common side effects of atorvastatin include stomach pain, gas, constipation, and muscle pain. Severe side effects include liver dysfunction and neuropathy.

Considerations

Atorvastatin should be prescribed with caution to patients with existing liver disease. Women taking atorvastatin who suspect pregnancy should notify the doctor immediately.

Warning

Your doctor should immediately be made aware of any increasing muscle pain or tenderness. This may the be a sign of a serious, irreversible muscle condition caused by the use of atorvastatin.
