- Orb weavers, commonly found outdoors in Illinois, have webs in places like barns. These spiders rarely bite, but if they do, the bite is comparable to a bee sting.
- A wolf spider is distinctive because of its inch-long body paired with two-inch legs. It is generally black, and can be found beneath logs or rocks. Its bite is uncommon and not dangerous.
- The brown recluse is the size of a quarter and has a violin shape behind its eyes. It may be found in boxes. The bite is dangerous in only about 10 percent of cases.
- Cobweb spiders may be found in a basement or garage. Most are not dangerous, with the exception of the black widow, whose bite may require medical treatment.
- The woodlouse spider may be found under rocks and logs. It is identified by its dark front and gray back. This spider may bite as a defense, but the pain goes away quickly.
