Types of Art Paintings
Art paintings can be examined in five different areas: when in history they were made, what medium or style they were created in, who made the artwork and what message the artist was trying to present.

History
-
Human beings have been painting well before recorded history. An example of an early painting was found in a cave in Chauvet Cave, in Vallon-Pont-dArc, Ardeche, France, which has been dated between 30,000 B.C. and 28,000 B.C.
Famous Painters and Their Styles
-
Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso are famous painting innovators. Van Gogh and Claude Monet were Impressionists, and Pablo Picasso was an Abstract Cubist.
Medium
-
Artists express their paintings using a variety of media. The three most popular media are oil, acrylic and watercolor.
Style
-
Artists paint in a variety different styles. These styles range from life-like Photo Realism to unidentifiable lines, dots and color called Abstract Expressionism.
Purpose
-
Each painting is an expression of an idea, emotion or situation from the artist's point of view. Art paintings offer viewers a glimpse of the artists' time period and the way people viewed and reacted to the world around them.
