Spelman College is a 4-year liberal arts institution of higher learning for black women. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Spelman College is "the nation's oldest historically black college for women," according to the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

    Founding

  1. Spelman College began in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary. Founded by Harriet E. Giles and Sophia B. Packard, the seminary received its college charter in 1924.
  2. Consortium

  3. Spelman College is part of the "largest consortium of historically Black institutions of higher learning in the world," according to Spelman.edu. Other partners in the consortium include Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine.
  4. Student Body and Faculty

  5. Spelman College has over 2,000 students currently enrolled. The student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1, according to the college's website.
  6. New Facilities

  7. The Albro, Falconer, Manley Science Center is the college's newest building, according to Collegeprofiles.com. Spelman also features the Camille O. Hanks Cosby Academic Center, which "provides classrooms and laboratories for students studying in the humanities," says Collegeprofiles.com.
  8. Campus Life

  9. The campus of Spelman College features 25 buildings on 39 acres of land. "Religious life and services form an important part of campus life," according to Collegeprofiles.com.
