Signs and Symptoms of Long-Term Anemia

Anemia is a disease in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells. This disease starts with subtle symptoms but when anemia is long-term, the symptoms become a lot worse. Anemia has a variety of symptoms that affect everyone differently.

Extreme Fatigue

Being tired is one of the main symptoms of anemia. But feeling extremely exhausted and too weak to perform daily functions like getting out of bed or standing for short periods is a sign of long-term anemia.

Pale Skin

People with long-standing anemia may be very pale in color or have a yellow skin tone. This is directly due to less red blood flowing through the vascular system.

Frquent Numbness and Tingling

Another symptom of long-term anemia is frequent tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. These areas may also feel cold. This is due to poor blood circulation in the limbs.

Shortness of Breath

People with long-term anemia may become winded just getting out of bed. Because the lungs are not getting enough oxygen from the circulating blood, a person is no longer able to breath easily.

Chest Pain

As anemia continues, the chest starts to hurt every time you exert yourself because the heart and lungs are working extra hard to function without an adequate supply of oxygen.
