About Mary Cassatt
Artist Mary Cassatt was an American Impressionist painter. Cassatt, who is known for her paintings depicting mothers with children, is considered by many to be one of the most important painters of the 19th century.

Early Years

Mary Cassatt was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, in 1844. Cassatt grew up in Philadelphia, and enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861.
Move to Europe
Joining the Impressionists

In 1877, noted painter Edgar Degas asked Mary Cassatt to exhibit with the Impressionists. Cassatt was the only American and the only woman asked to join the movement. Her works were shown with the Impressionists several times between 1879 and 1886.
Works and Medium
Later Life

Mary Cassatt continued to exhibit her works in the early 1900s. Cassatt's failing eyesight ultimately led her to stop painting in 1914. She died on June 14, 1926, in Beaufresne, near Paris, France.
