Definition of Norovirus

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis in humans. The virus is commonly called "the stomach flu," although it is not a part of the influenza class of viruses. It's spread from person-to-person in crowded areas such as amusement parks, cruise ships and planes.

  1. Symptoms

    • Because the norovirus causes gastroenteritis, most symptoms are indicative of a digestive microbe. Diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps are common symptoms. Occasionally fever and headaches occur in patients.

    Duration

    • Duration of the virus is only one to two days. Symptoms come on strongly and cause severe side effects, but the infection clears within 48 hours.

    Spread

    • Norovirus is spread through food contamination and person-to-person contact. It can be spread by touching a counter or table after an infected person has touched the surface.

    Treatment

    • There is no vaccination or treatment for the virus. Patients are advised to treat possible dehydration with fluids and electrolyte replacement in the diet.

    Prevention

    • Sanitary measures such as washing hands and cleaning fruits and vegetables before consumption can prevent the spread of norovirus. Wash any clothing that is used by infected patients with hot water and soap.
