Recovery Time After a Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a permanent form of sterilization for men. In some cases, a successful reversal is possible. When compared with female sterilization methods, a vasectomy is relatively simple. Recovery time is usually less than one week.

  1. Procedure

    • A vasectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia to numb the affected areas. During the surgery, the doctor will make one tiny puncture near the top of the scrotum. The doctor will them pull out the vas deferens (tubes) and tie them shut while also either cauterizing them or clipping them with surgical clips. The procedure takes 30 minutes.

    Post-Surgery Symptoms

    • Soon after surgery, the scrotum might appear bruised or swollen. Also, pain might be felt in the scrotum.

    Recovery Time

    • Pain and discomfort might be felt in the scrotum area for a few days after surgery.

    Recovery Recommendations

    • For the first 48 hours, men should wear underwear that is tight-fitting. Applying an ice pack intermittently during the three days after the vasectomy might be helpful. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen because that might cause bleeding. Do not engage in sexual activity for at least one week.

    Signs of Post-Surgery Infection

    • An infection could increase recovery time. Signs of an infection include pus, increasing pain, continual swelling and fever.
