Common Side Effects of Zyprexa

Zyprexa is the brand name for the drug olanzapine, prescribed to treat psychotic conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Zyprexa is categorized as an atypical antipsychotic medication, and it works by modifying chemical activity in the brain.

  1. Most Common Effects

    • In some pre-approval clinical studies, as detailed by eMedTV, over 30 percent of participants experienced drowsiness or dry mouth when taking Zyprexa.

    Additional Common Effects

    • Over 20 percent experienced increased appetite and weight gain. Weight gain associated with Zyprexa use can be significant, and result in the related effects of high blood cholesterol and high blood sugar.

    Other Side Effects

    • Many other side effects were experienced by over 10 percent of participants in Zyprexa clinical studies. These effects include accidental injury, constipation, dizziness, heartburn or indigestion, insomnia and weakness.

    Less Common Effects

    • Other common side effects, occurring in over 5 percent of Zyprexa users, included back pain, joint pain, coughing, low blood pressure, runny nose and shakiness.
