Myths About the God Apollo

Apollo was the god of the sun in Greek mythology, mirroring his sister Artemis who was goddess of the moon. He's also associated with archery, music, healing, and predicting the future.

  1. Birth

    • Apollo's mother Leto was prevented from giving birth on the land. Zeus created a floating island called Delos for Apollo and Artemis to be born.

    Chariot

    • Many myths depict Apollo riding the chariot of the sun across the sky each day.

    Delphi

    • According to myth, Apollo killed the serpent Python near Delphi. A nearby spring produced vapors which were said to foretell the future.

    Daphne

    • Apollo once pursued the nymph Daphne, who was repelled by him. Her father turned her into a laurel tree to keep her safe; the tree subsequently became sacred to Apollo.

    Cassandra

    • Apollo gave the mortal woman Cassandra the power of prophecy, but later cursed her so that, while her predictions all came true, no one ever believed her.
